About Us
The Physiological Society of Japan (PSJ) is active through meetings, publications, and committee activities. Its aim is to promote research in the physiological sciences by providing free communications to members and by actively committing itself to the national and international scientific communities. The Society publishes two journals: The Journal of Physiological Sciences, a bimonthly in English , and The Journal of The Physiological Society of Japan, a monthly in Japanese. Message from the President
Our Society was established in Tokyo in the July of 1922, and thus has a history of one century. Among 132 Societies within the Japanese Association of Medical Societies, we are one of the oldest medical societies. In 2022, we will celebrate our 100th anniversary.
The word “physiology” is originated from a Greek “phusiologia, “ which means the philosophy of the nature, and thus studies the function and mechanism of the life. The target of our study varies from a single cell to the whole body, as well as from ion, gene, protein, cell, to human behavior. Accordingly, the background of our Society members varies from medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, to sports medicine or physiological education; we believe that this is our major strength.
Our Society, a member of the FAOPS (Federation of Asian and Oceania Physiological Societies) and IUPS (International Union of Physiological Sciences) , has grown to be one of the largest physiological societies in the world. In 2019, we successfully hosted the 20th FAOPS meeting in Kobe, Japan, with a large attendance of more than 2,200 scientists from 42 countries in the world. The Proceeding was published on the Journal of Physiological Sciences, the official Journal of our Society, which is now established as one of the highest standard journals in the field of physiology
For the next century, we plan to expand and grow our Society so that we can accommodate more international members, recruit young scientists, and promote multi-discipline research with other medical societies. We will strongly advance collaborative efforts with oversea physiological societies.
We have no doubt that our Society will continue growing for the next century. We are very welcome you to join us. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
Respectfully yours,
Yoshihiro Ishikawa, MD, PhD
